...or
how do we spend the money we raise?
Here
is a brief summary from our Service Committee Chair of some of the donations and help we have given to groups and individuals since July '08. July to December 2009
The first six months of the Lions year have seen us help fund a young lady
to attend an 'Activenture' week at Hindleap Warren which she thoroughly
enjoyed. 'A' frame boards were supplied to the Luxford Day Centre to advertise
their events.
Sponsorship to a London Marathon runner running for Clic
Sargent. Seven
Sunday runs were made where we take out groups of Senior
Citizens for a run
in the country in our Minibus, finishing up with a cream tea,
again
thoroughly enjoyed by all.
There was national television coverage of Hilary Lister's sailing round
Britain , to which we and other Lion's Clubs made donations, Hilary being a
member of Whitstable Lions Club. She did this in order to help others with
the money she raised. This was a truly magnificent achievement.
Last year we helped Operation Florian take fire appliances to Macedonia,
supported by 5 other East Sussex Lions Clubs, which we are doing again this
year. In December we supported Wealden Skills Centre Craft Fair for the
younger age groups together with Father Christmas. Also our Lions Christmas
tree was decorated by Sue Egginton at Uckfield's Holy Cross church. We also
ran our annual Senior Citizen's party at Nutley which was attended by over
100 people.
Educationwise we are involved with the Uckfield Community College with
Tacade and Life Skills Programmes as well as helping a young man from
Heathfield achieve his dream in ballet. Other support has gone to the Leo
House Hospice as well as the recent disasters in the Phillippines, Samoa and
Indonesia. We have also continued our support with a donation to the Asian
eye camps programme.
Jan
- Mar 09 Summary
Our
third quarter has seen us help sponsor two runners in this
year's London
Marathon, also a Girl Guide to go to a Guide/Scout Jamboree
in Germany.
Help was also given to 'Operation Florian' in funding transportation
costs
of obsolete fire service appliances to Macedonia, where they
also help train
crews, who at present manage with very basic equipment.
Two
Edukits are going to help provide essential educational supplies
for the
world's most vulnerable children. On this theme two of our
members are
going to Zambia through Demelza to the Jon Hospice to which
the Club has
contributed, where valuable assistance is given in helping
set up various
projects.
To
Croydon Lions Club in the Australian state of Victoria, we
sent £500.00
to help people on the ground hard hit by the bush fires there.
Youth
- we have provided Tacade material to Buxted School as well
as to
school nurses for use on their travels. Donations were made
to Maresfield
Cricket Club and Buxted Cricket Club for their Junior sections
to help
purchase equipment for the coming season.
Jul
- Dec 08 Summary
This
Lion's 'year' so far we have helped sponsor a young student
to go to Ethiopia to carry out Volunteer work in an orphanage.
We have donated £100.00 to help Buxted Inn with a fundraising
event in aid of their Landlady, Jackie Bailey, who is recovering
from serious illness.
A large teddy bear, kindly donated by a local lady, was presented
to Chailey Heritage School along with monies from our sponsored
walk. Wealden Talking Newspapers, who do excellent work for
blind and partially sighted people, also benefited from our
sponsored walk.
Our President's project saw 120 teddies given to the local
ambulance station to give to children being taken to hospital
as well as a donation to Demelza House. We have held several
Sunday runs, where senior citizens are taken in our minibus
for a trip around the countryside ending with a cream tea
during the summer/autumn time.
Our
Support for Hospice appeals have seen donations go to St.Wilfrid's
in Eastbourne and Eleanor Lions Hospice in Northfleet. Also
supported were a Sight Savers eye camp in India and, more
locally, Buxted and Fletching schools supported with Tacade
material which helps teachers raise children's awareness of
alcohol, tobacco and drugs. December saw us provide a Christmas
party for over 100 senior citizens where tea, entertainment
and Bingo were laid on and greatly appreciated by those attending
this annual event.
